ADVANCED DRAWING

The Cooper Union, Fall 2022

Professors: Sue Gussow

In this course, students were tasked with crafting a thesis through drawing to delve into a chosen concept or practice.

During the initial half of the semester, I devoted myself to comprehensive studies of revered artists like Goya, Michelangelo, and Da Vinci, allowing me to cultivate a profound appreciation for their depictions of the human form.

As my exploration deepened, I began creating self-portraits depicting my own body in various positions, using marks and composition to convey distinct emotions. Two years ago I suffered a herniated disc in my lower back, an injury that has remained with me every day since. This ailment consistently influences my daily life, whether through the pain it inflicts or the heightened awareness it compels me to maintain. This body of work is intended to examine physical pain, and how it’s articulated through mark-making.
